What's it all about...

It is all about assisting children whose literacy levels and self-esteem need an extra boost. In a traditional sense the definition of literacy was considered to be an ability to read or write. However in a contemporary context that definition has expanded to embrace every aspect of communication.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
says that literacy is a human right, a tool of personal empowerment and a means for
cultural
development.
It has drafted the following definition: "Literacy is the ability to identify,
understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and
written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a
continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to
develop his or her knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the
wider society."
Literacy is language in use – speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing and drawing. Reading aloud to children
- increases their vocabulary
- expands their knowledge of the world around them
- whets their appetite for learning
- improves memory, language and listening skills
- stimulates imagination
- hones observation skills
- promotes self-confidence
- satisfies curiosity
- encourages positive social interaction
- develops a positive attitude toward books as a source of pleasure and information
You can assist children with their literacy by READING ALOUD EVERY DAY.
