About Us

Established in September 2004, The Pyjama Foundation is a Brisbane based not-for-profit organisation committed to giving children in care the same opportunities in life as other children. Through its volunteer ‘angels’ it delivers read aloud programs to assist children in foster and alternative care in Australia improve their literacy.

Literacy is the ability to speak, listen, read and use written information, as well as to write and draw.  It is critical to a child’s success in life.  Literacy is both socially and culturally constructed and, in Australia today, in a state of constant change.

Young people learn through their physical, social and cultural environments.  Listening to stories from the first months of life helps children understand that books are filled with delights, facts, fun and food for thought.  If their experience is shared, they will be all the happier.

Language and literacy go hand in hand.  When adults read to children they help build their vocabulary, their memory, their language and their general knowledge skills.  They also develop their imagination as they gather information about the world around them.

Their self-esteem grows from the increased communication and the way they conduct their relationships with other people are formed.  Their interest in the natural and built environment, including their attitude toward animals, the plants, the sea, the planets, the arts, the cities and the countryside are all established.

For children less than five READING ALOUD is a joyous preparation towards success at school.  For children over five it is all about assisting them toward success in life as they learn to enjoy being positive about themselves and others.

Up until fourth grade children learn to read. After that they read to learn so if they enter school ready to learn it follows that they will have an increased ability to achieve.

At The Pyjama Foundation we want to highlight nationally the importance of READING ALOUD TO ALL AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN and put in place strategies and people to ensure that this message is broadcast both far and wide.

Words are how the world works.
