Award winning children's author and literacy expert Mem Fox's book for adults "Reading Magic" inspired our mentor training program. Mem believes that to improve literacy standards in Australia, every child should have 1000 books read to it, before they learn to read themselves.

Rebecca Sparrow
Joel and Cat Set the Story Straight, The Girl Most Likely
Rebecca Sparrow is a born and bred Brisbane girl. She is the author of
three best-selling novels, The Girl Most Likely, The Year Nick McGowan Came To
Stay and Joel and Cat Set The Story Straight, which she co-wrote with Nick
Earls. Rebecca writes a weekly column for the Sunday Mail and her favourite
children’s book is Charlotte’s Web (closely followed by Meg and Mog, Milly Molly
Mandy and The Secret Seven).

Kate Forsyth
Kate Forsyth is the internationally bestselling author of numerous
books for children and adults. Her latest book is Sea-Magic, the third in 'Ben
and Tim's Magical Misadventures', a series for lower primary school children.
Her novel for older readers, The Gypsy Crown, has been sold all round the world.
In Australia, where it was published as a six-book series, it won five Aurealis
Awards for Excellence in Childrens' Fiction, and Book 5: The Lightning Bolt was
named a CBC Notable Book for 2007. Kate wanted to be a writer from a young age.
She learned to read early. Her first novel was written at the age of seven.

Andy Griffiths
Andrew "Andy" Griffiths (born September 3, 1961) is an Australian children's
book author and comedy writer. He is most notable for his Just series, which was
converted into an animated television series called What's with Andy? Originally
a vocalist with an 80s alternative rock band called "Gothic Farmyard", Griffiths
grew up in Melbourne, Australia.
Felice Arena
Felice Arena is one of Australia's most popular children's authors and
illustrators. His books have topped bestseller lists and have garnered many
awards. He is best known for the bestselling Specky Magee series and most
recently his picture book, Sally and Dave - a Slug Story.

Nick Earls
Nick is an award winning novelist from Brisbane, Australia. His
book 48 Shades of Brown won the Children;s Book Council of Australia
Book of the Year Award in 2000. Bachelor Kisses, Zigzag Street

The Ignatians Musical Society
The Ignatians Musical Society is one of Brisbane’s largest and most successful
non-professional music theatre companies. Since its establishment in 1973
Ignatians has staged over 60 major productions including The Sound of Music,
Grease, Footloose, Les Misérables, Cats and this year’s production Into the
Woods is an award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim. The Ignatians now READ
ALOUD to children at BROOKSIDE SHOPPING CENTRE at Mitchelton on the second

Harvest Rain Theatre Company
Founded in 1985, Harvest Rain has grown to become one of the largest independent
theatre companies in Australia. Operating out of the Sydney Street Theatre in
New Farm, Brisbane, Harvest Rain is well-known for producing high quality and

Sofie Formica was born and raised in Brisbane, she began her television career
at the age of 14. Her resume boasts appearances on Wombat, Saturday Disney, Now
You See It (as Australia’s first female game show host), Just Kidding, Home and
Away, and she was an original member of The Great Outdoors. In 1995 she left
Australia to work on-air in the US as a reporter on EXTRA, for whom she
interviewed many Hollywood celebrities. Sofie currently hosts the popular
Channel Seven travel program The Great South East. She balances her TV life with
raising three children.
