The Pyjama Foundation... taking time to read aloud to children
The Pyjama Foundation Mentor Training Program equips volunteer angels to read to children in foster care on a weekly basis. The program offers foster carers support and a well-deserved respite. Our reading angels provide extra reading experiences for children in care to increase the number of books read to them with the aim of:
- assisting to improve their levels of literacy
- inspire a love of learning
- instilling a belief in self-worth
- helping them to be confident people valued by society
The Pyjama Foundation highlights the national importance READING ALOUD TO ALL AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN.

Appointed carers provide supportive environments for vulnerable children some for one or two nights, a few months or even years. Many children require special nurturing and need to regain a sense of self worth and self- confidence.
The Pyjama Foundation is expanding to offer our volunteer angel reading services to children in care both state wide and nationally. Statistics provided by State Government departments estimate there are over 26,000 children in care in Australia. The need to assist them is urgent.

Director
Bronwyn Sheehan is pleased to announce that Brisbane City Council (BCC) has
supported the work of The Pyjama Foundation by providing an avenue for it to
raise awareness of its community work in all of its Libraries. They have also
established an innovative membership scheme for our volunteer readers who will
access resources through Brisbane City Library Services.

An important aspect of this new initiative of BCC is to empower volunteer angels to implement their popular, and very effective, Gold Star Reading Club Program to foster children. Special events and activities will also offer the children new experiences and assist them on their journey in life. Follow this link to find out what's on in the Brisbane City Libraries.
